What to Expect with Your New Soffit, Fascia, & Gutters from BSS Exteriors
Congratulations on your new soffit, fascia, and gutter system!
These components may not always grab attention, but they are some of the most important protectors of your home.
- Fascia provides the trim line at the edge of your roof, securing gutters and giving your home a finished look.
- Soffit protects the underside of roof overhangs and, when vented, allows fresh air to circulate into your attic—helping regulate temperature and moisture.
- Gutters channel rainwater safely away from your home, protecting foundations, landscaping, and siding from water damage.
At BSS Exteriors, we install high-quality soffit, fascia, and gutter systems designed specifically for Florida’s climate. Our materials resist fading, warping, and insect damage, while keeping your roofline strong and your property safe from water intrusion.
This guide will walk you through what to expect now that your new system has been installed:
- What to expect in the first weeks
- Care and maintenance tips
- Warranty coverage and service process
- When to call us if something needs attention
Your Home. Only Better. Built to Breathe. Built to Last.
What to Expect Right After Installation
Your new soffit, fascia, and gutter system is designed to immediately improve protection and appearance. Here are a few things you may notice in the first days and weeks:
Soffit Ventilation
If you chose a vented soffit, you may notice more airflow into the attic. This is intentional—it helps regulate temperature and moisture, reducing the risk of mold and improving energy efficiency.
Expansion & Contraction
Aluminum and vinyl materials naturally expand and contract with temperature changes. Small pops, clicks, or slight movement are normal and expected.
Color Matching
Freshly installed soffit, fascia, and gutters may look brighter or cleaner than older trim or siding. Over time, natural weathering will help everything blend in.
Gutter Performance
- During the first few rains, gutters may “settle in.” You might hear water running or see brief splashing at certain points. This is normal. If leaks persist at seams or downspouts, let us know.
- Splashing at roof valleys is common in heavy Florida downpours—downspout placement is designed to minimize this, but no system can eliminate it entirely.
Cleanup
Our crews will remove old materials and debris. Small granules from shingles or construction dust may appear in gutters after installation but will wash out with rain.
Care & Maintenance Basics
Your soffit, fascia, and gutters work together to protect your home. With just a little care, they’ll continue performing for decades.
Soffit Care
- Keep Soffit Vents Clear: Vented soffit allows fresh air to circulate into your attic. Over time, dirt, insects, or debris can lodge in the perforations. Inspect periodically and clear blockages with a soft brush or gentle rinse.
- Caution with Water: Never spray water directly upward into vented soffit. Doing so can push water into insulation, leading to mold, mildew, or rot. Instead, lightly rinse surfaces at a downward angle if cleaning is needed.
- Cleaning: Wash soffit surfaces once or twice a year with a garden hose at a safe angle, or use a soft brush and mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or high-pressure washers.
- Pest Prevention: Birds, squirrels, and insects may attempt to nest in soffits. If you hear scratching or see signs of intrusion, call for service immediately.
Fascia Care
- Visual Inspections: Look for signs of warping, dents, or detachment, especially after major storms.
- Paint or Finish: Aluminum fascia is low-maintenance, but painted or custom finishes may need occasional touch-ups.
- Gutter Connection: Since fascia boards carry the gutter system, check periodically that gutters are securely fastened.
Gutter Care
- Routine Cleaning: Clear gutters of leaves, pine needles, and debris at least twice a year (spring and fall), or more often if trees are nearby. Clogged gutters are the leading cause of water overflow and fascia damage.
- Downspouts & Discharge: Standard elbows typically discharge water about 8 inches from the foundation. With splash blocks, we can extend this to about 16 inches. Some municipalities have specific code requirements for discharge distance—BSS will advise if this applies to your project.
- Leaf Guards (Optional): We offer leaf guard systems to reduce debris entering gutters. With these systems, it’s normal for some debris (like leaves or pine needles) to sit temporarily on top of the guard until they dry and blow away. This does not affect performance.
- Storm Prep: Before hurricane season, confirm gutters and downspouts are clear so heavy rains can flow freely.
- Granule Build-Up: Over time, roofing granules will wash into gutters. This is normal, but excessive build-up should be cleared so it doesn’t restrict flow.
Seasonal Care Checklist
Spring
- Wash soffit and fascia surfaces.
- Clear winter debris from gutters.
- Inspect soffit perforations for dirt or blockages.
Summer (Storm Season)
- Check for loose gutter brackets or fascia movement.
- Ensure downspouts are clear and pointed away from the home.
- Remove any new nests or debris around soffit vents.
Fall
- Clear gutters of falling leaves.
- Rinse soffit and fascia to remove mildew or pollen buildup.
- Confirm ventilation openings are unobstructed.
Winter
- Florida winters are mild, but check gutters after storms.
- Inspect soffit and fascia for cracks or separations that could worsen in cooler temps.
Warranty Coverage
BSS Exteriors Warranty
- All soffit, fascia, and gutter installations are covered by our 1-year workmanship warranty.
- Critical issues are reviewed within 5 business days; all other claims within 15 business days.
- Service requests should begin through the Buildertrend Homeowner Portal (preferred). You can also use our website service form or, if necessary, call/email our office.
Manufacturer Warranties
- Soffit & Fascia: Most aluminum and vinyl products carry a limited lifetime warranty against peeling, flaking, rust, or major defects. Some painted finishes may also be covered for a set number of years depending on the product line.
- Gutters: Gutter coil manufacturers vary in the warranties they provide. While many do not extend long-term coverage in Florida’s climate, some offer limited protection on the coil finish itself. Your project manager can clarify if the product used on your home carries an extended warranty.
- Leaf Guards (if installed): Manufacturer warranties generally cover material defects. Performance (keeping out all debris) depends on proper maintenance, and sitting debris on top is considered normal, not a defect.
Important Notes
- Visual Issues: Scratches, dents, or misalignment must be reported within 30 days of installation.
- Maintenance Requirements: Clogged gutters, water back-up, or pest damage are not covered. Homeowners are responsible for routine cleaning and care.
- Storm Damage: High winds, falling branches, or hurricane-related damage are not covered under manufacturer or workmanship warranties. This type of damage should be addressed through homeowner’s insurance.
- Mix of Materials: If soffit, fascia, or gutters are tied into older sections of your home, warranties only apply to the new materials installed by BSS Exteriors.
When to Call Us
Your soffit, fascia, and gutters are designed to be low-maintenance, but Florida’s weather and environment can create conditions where service may be needed. Contact BSS Exteriors if you notice:
Soffit
- Loose, sagging, or missing panels.
- Pest intrusion (birds, squirrels, or insects entering vents).
- Water stains on soffit, which may indicate a roof or gutter issue.
Fascia
- Visible detachment, bending, or damage after storms.
- Gaps between fascia and roofline.
- Signs of water intrusion behind fascia boards.
Gutter
- Persistent leaks at seams, joints, or corners.
- Overflow during moderate rain (not just extreme Florida downpours).
- Gutters pulling away from fascia or visibly sagging.
- Downspouts clogged or no longer draining properly.
- Damage from falling branches or storm debris.
